Project: Advanced Neutron Radiography

Neutron radiography is one of the most advanced and unique technology that could provide not only the imagine but also the identification of the important elements such as H, C, N and O in drugs and explosives which are not easily investigated in traditional photon radiography.

The neutron and photon interaction mechanisms with matter are significantly different and offer complementary information. While photon attenuation in matter is directly dependent on atomic number, neutrons are efficiently attenuated by only a few specific elements. Materials with low atomic numbers, and particularly those containing high levels of hydrogen such as water and organic materials are clearly visible in neutron radiographs.

Using a pulsed low energy neutron source (up to 13 MeV) at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility, I am currently working on the development of a filter-difference based technique and several detector systems including scintillator and silicon based detectors and CCD camera.

In order to optimize the experimental results, MCNP (A General Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code) are used to predict and compare the simulation and experiment results.
