BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- IUB physics PhD thesis student Jerry Balta has won a NSF INTERN award. The NSF INTERN program supports PhD students to spend 6 months working at a company as part of their educational training. Jerry will spend 6 months in Los Angeles working at a small startup company, Phase III Physics, led by former IU physics graduate student Chris Haddock. Jerry will work towards the development of new types of flexible slow neutron shielding with possible applications in neutron physics and scattering and in space applications. This ongoing research is supported both by a Phase 1 Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) award from the DOE for neutron detector shielding development and also by the IU Translational Research Grant (TreG) program.
