IUB Department of Physics faculty member, Dr. Caryn Palatchi, has received the National Science Foundation's (NSF) prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award. This award supports early-career faculty members who show great potential within their fields to conduct impactful research and to serve as academic role models. The award spans five years and is in the amount of $460,000.
The research Dr. Palatchi will be conducting is focused on electron beam control and measurement for the upcoming P2 experiment at MESA. P2 is an extremely precise parity violating electron scattering (PVES) experiment searching for new neutral currents beyond the standard model in electron-proton scattering. This research program is essential to the achievement of precision beam polarization measurement and parity quality beam for P2 to meet its stringent systematic uncertainty goals. Designing a detector package for a novel atomic Hydrogen polarimeter never before used in a parity experiment would mark a significant technical development in the field of high precision beam polarization measurement.
Dr. Palatchi is committed to supporting the education of future scientists and creating and sustaining a positive, inclusive, safe, and professional research and training environment. This research program will train graduate students and postdocs to become world experts in polarized beam control.
